File format selection made a little easier.

Format

Characteristic

  2. Highest quality.
  3. Produces largest size files.
  4. Best for use in editing.
  5. Best for printing
  6. Universal support in applications and computer platforms.

JPEG

(Joint Photographic Experts Group)

  1. A compressed file.
  2. High quality.
  3. Produces manageable size files.
  4. Editing...each/save operation the image deteriorates further because the compression scheme runs again. Not a good thing.

Approximate Number of Scanned Images per CD
  TIFF JPEG
700 DPI 350 1029
1400 DPI 87 280
2800 DPI 21 63
4000 DPI 10 26
Approximate Number of Scanned Images per DVD
  TIFF JPEG
700 DPI 2100 6,176
1400 DPI 525 1,680
2800 DPI 131 378
4000 DPI 63 161

These values are approximations and can vary based on if the image is cropped or captured at full aperture of the scanner. JPEG file values are based on saving the file at the highest quality JPEG setting from the scanner. File size will vary based on the content of the image and how the JPEG algorithm will compress that content.

A value of 4.2GB usable space is used for DVDs in the approximations. Even though it has 4.7GB storage an overhead is used up in writing files and directories.

A value of 700MB is used for CD approximations.
